From Waste to Resource<\/h4>\nCollection and Preparation of Substrates<\/h2>\n
The first step in biogas production is the collection of organic material, which can include food waste, agricultural residues, sewage sludge, and other biodegradable materials. These materials are called substrates and form the basis of biogas production. The substrate is prepared by sorting and, if necessary, shredding to increase the surface area for microbial action.<\/p>\n
The Heart of the Process<\/h4>\nAnaerobic Digestion<\/h2>\n
The central part of biogas production is anaerobic digestion, which occurs in enclosed tanks called digesters. In these tanks, microorganisms break down the organic material in the absence of oxygen. The process occurs in several stages (hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis) where microorganisms gradually convert the substrate into biogas, a mixture of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), along with a smaller amount of other gases.<\/p>\n
From Raw Gas to Clean Energy<\/h4>\nPurification and Upgrading of Biogas<\/h2>\n
After anaerobic digestion, biogas is purified from impurities and upgraded to the desired quality depending on its intended use. Upgrading involves increasing the concentration of methane, which enhances the fuel’s energy value. The purified and upgraded biogas can then be used as an environmentally friendly fuel in vehicles, for heating, or to produce electricity and heat through cogeneration.<\/p>\n
Completing the Cycle<\/h4>\nUtilization of Residual Products<\/h2>\n
After digestion, a nutrient-rich residual product known as digestate remains. The digestate can be further processed to separate liquid from solid components. The solid part can be used as biofertilizer, rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, contributing to a sustainable cycle in agriculture. The liquid fraction can be reused in the process or further treated to meet emission requirements.<\/p>\n
